Abhi is shown in the episode caring for Akshu initially. Deeply considering it, he decides not to allow her to make a bad choice even if his own mother deserves blame. He comforts himself knowing their friendship will not break. As Abhi exits, the Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai theme music plays. Akshu awakens up moments later and, seeing the drapes moving, naturally remembers Abhi.
Manish agrees when Dadi proposes that Suwarna return the wedding plans to the Goenkas. Suwarna calls Manjiri, who is racing through household tasks. Suwarna suggests returning the wedding stuff. Angered, Manjiri urges Suwarna to persuade Akshu to focus on her future with Abhi and Abhir rather than Abhinav’s child. Manjiri calls to apologize after hanging up. Surekha misreads the situation and expects further reprimands.
The ambivalence in Manjiri’s apologies to Manish is indicative of her inner turmoil. By highlighting that her happiness is with Abhi and Abhir, she implores him to get Akshu to rethink her decision. As a result, Dadi is worried about Akshu’s ability to make the tough decision between her past and her present.
Other scenes show Ruhi and Abhir playing. Ruhi taunts Abhir’s feeble kick, while Abhi emphasizes his mother’s wedding date demand. Ruhi, in her usual casual style, tells Abhi that everything will be OK if the marriage fails. She jokingly suggests he rest with chocolate milk while she gets ready for school.
When they get back to the Birla house, Abhir finds an old picture of Abhi and Akshu. When Manjiri sees the picture, she says she is going to put it in Abhir’s room but decides not to because he won’t be staying there. Her vague words show how upset she is inside and how much she wants Akshu and Abhi to get along again.
Kairav and Muskaan try to cheer up Akshu. When Abhi visits the Goenkas to talk to Akshu, tensions rise. Akshu questions him about his mother’s behavior despite his apologies. She accuses Manjiri of hypocrisy for accepting Neil and Ruhi but not Abhinav’s child. Abhi thinks his mother is wrong and supports Akshu, but Manjiri’s remarks hurt his reply.
The couple should wait, Dadi tells them, because Manjiri’s fears come from bad things that happened to her. She tells them to stay strong and says she hopes Manjiri will finally accept their family.
The story now centers on Abhir, who comes home from school with Aarohi. During a fight with his friends, marker ink got on his shirt. Akshu gets very angry and says he will tell the principal about the kids who did it. But Abhir shocks everyone by saying that his problems are because of the future child. Akshu, who is sad, tries to comfort him, but he stays upset.
Ruhi comforts Abhir and urges him to talk. Aarohi and Suwarna tell Akshu that older children often worry about new siblings. Akshu vows to strike a fine balance between her children.
Abhi protects Abhir from puja preparations so he may attend school without feeling forgotten. Akshu refuses Manish’s puja invitation for Abhi. Despite her reassurances, Abhir worries about losing his mother’s attention to the new baby.
The family gets ready for the puja early the following morning. Akshu is pleased to remind Abhir of her pledge to visit his show and compliments his scientific project. But among the busy getting ready, Abhir accidentally runs into Muskaan almost spilling the prasad. Though Muskaan chastises him gently, the episode highlights Abhir’s mounting sense of familial dislocation.
In the last scene of the show, Akshu is pulled between her duties to Abhir and her duties to her family. The fact that she promised to go to the exhibition and that the puja is coming up shows how hard it is for her to balance being a mother, daughter, and partner.
