South Indian film stars Dhanusha and Nayantara are in the spotlight. The issue arose over a copyright dispute between Nayantara and Dhanush causes a delay in Nayantara’s documentary release.  This caused a heated copyright battle between previous co-stars. 

The controversy arose when Dhanush filed a ₹10 crore copyright claim against Nayanthara’s upcoming documentary series titled ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale’, delaying its release. The documentary was released for Nayantara’s fans shedding light on Nayantara’s untold aspects of life including her marriage and personal life details.

Copyright Issues Stall Documentary Release Over ‘3-second video clip’

Nayanthara is often referred to as the “Lady Superstar” of South Indian Cinema. Nayantara” took the step of releasing her personal life documentary that’s beyond her stardom in the interest of her fans. Nayantara’s documentary “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale’’ was set to release on the Netflix OTT platform, but faced trouble after the launch of its trailer over a 3-second video clip and music from the 2015 Tamil movie ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’.

The film was produced by Dhanush starring Nayantara alongside Vijay Sethupathi. When the trailer featured a music clip from the movie ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’, after which Dhanush’s legal team issued a copyright notice mentioning the unauthorized use of the song and the visuals from the film, putting the documentary’s release on hold.

Taking to social media, Nayanthara expressed her disappointment, as she went on to explain the struggles she and her team faced while creating this documentary. Nayantara further approached the controversial issue revealing how, despite months of attempting to obtain an NOC(No Objection Certificate) from Dhanush for using the song and its visuals, her team’s requests to do so were denied. 

The situation escalated when she received a legal notice demanding ₹10 crore for a three-second clip in the trailer. Responding to the copyright claim by Dhanush’s legal team, Nayantara posted pictures of her response in letter images to actor Dhanush feeling disappointed over his vengeful acts through copyright claims.

Nayanthara wrote, “The notice was shocking, especially since the visuals in question were behind-the-scenes clips shot on personal devices, already accessible on social media. Demanding such a large sum for a minor inclusion reflects the kind of intentions behind this action.”

Impact on the Team and Release Date Update

Nayantara expressed her sadness and disappointment over the copyright claim matter mentioning how the dispute has affected not only her but also her fans. She further added how she and all the collaborators and everyone in the documentary team worked tirelessly on the project. But Dhanush’s vengeful acts to delay their efforts to release the documentary after seeking two years of No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Dhanush, Nayantara has now decided to drop the legal matter and has decided to re-edit the documentary to exclude the disputed content.

The re-edited and updated version of Nayantara’s documentary “Nayantara: Beyond The Fairy Tale” is now scheduled to be released on Netflix and other OTT platforms on 18th November 2024.
